Bernardo di Carlo is born 21 December 1843 in his parents' home on via della Lombardia in Corleone. His birth is reported by the midwife. His parents are Angela Liggio, age 21, and Francesco di Carlo, age 30, agricola (farmer).[1]
Bernardo marries Cira Oliveri on 7 January 1867 in Corleone, the first marriage for either of them. Their fathers are both still living.[2][3]
Cira and Bernardo have at least six children together: two sons named Francesco (1869 and 1870), Angela (1873), Biagia (1876), Giovanni (1878), and Vincenzo (1882).
There are two sons named Francesco. They and their sister, Angela, are named after Bernardo's parents, and Biagia and Vincenzo are named after Cira's parents. It is traditional to name the second son and daughter after their maternal grandparents.
Both sons named Francesco dies in infancy.[4][5][6][7]
Giovanni dies on 30 July 1879 at one year and five months of age.
Vincenzo dies at eleven months of age on 15 July 1883.
Angela marries Leoluca Mancuso on 12 June 1892.
Biagia is 17 when she marries Girolamo Mancuso on 30 November 1893. Her father lives in America at this time.[8]
Bernardo gives his consent via the Italian Consulate in New Orleans. The other three parents, who are all living, appear in person to give theirs.[9]
Both Girolamo and Biagia are below the legal age of consent, which is 25.
Bernardo de Carlo, age 57, a laborer, appears in line 369 of the manifest of the Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm, arriving in New York on 17 October 1894. His destination is New Orleans.[10]
